004. Can you overcome your parenting-style differences?

More ways to listen:

We have very different parenting styles. When we met, Kim was a more "relaxed" parent with her daughter Annika.  She didn't have much authority and Annika often called the shots.  Mike tends to be more of a 'drill sergeant' parent - he likes order and expects compliance (this usually doesn’t turn out well for step-parents, by the way).

Once we were all under the same roof, we quickly realized that our opposing parenting styles created tension and disagreement.  It wasn't long before we had two mutual kids and realized we needed to figure out this parenting stuff!

Parenting is a common challenge for most couples, and when you add in all the complexities of blended family life, it often leads to relational barriers.  Step-couples often get locked into the belief that it's their differing parenting styles that are preventing them from working as a team.  When this happens they tend to fall into patterns of conflict and disconnection. Then it can feel like everyone is stuck in chaos and the kids end up experiencing unpredictable parental responses.

In this episode, we'll explore what parenting styles really are — and what most couples really mean when they are feeling frustrated that their styles are just too different.  Then we'll offer practical insights and resources that will help you take the next step toward getting united in your parenting.

Inside this Episode:

  • What are Parenting-Styles…really?

  • Is there a Parenting-Style that is "best"?

  • The challenges of the dinner table in a blended family

  • Focusing on shared values and the benefit of compromising
